Retaining Walls in Highfields

Retaining walls in Highfields are most often part of a brand-new build rather than a repair job. As one of the region’s fastest-growing communities — a township on the Great Dividing Range just north of Toowoomba, filling out with new estates like The Avenues, Kilalah Park, Sunrise and Botanic — Highfields is where homes are going up on fresh, often sloping and acreage-sized lots every week. Getting a level building pad, a usable yard and a safe driveway out of an undulating block almost always means retaining, and doing it right from the start on reactive clay. Our network of QBCC-licensed builders works hand in glove with new builds here. Every job starts with a free on-site quote.

New estates, large lots, sloping ground

Highfields’ growth is built on space — large homesites and acreage blocks with mountain views, creek frontage and native reserves are exactly what draws families and downsizers up the range. The trade-off is terrain: those generous lots undulate, and a flat building envelope has to be cut and held. Retaining on a new Highfields block typically means cut-and-fill to create a level pad, boundary walls to square off a sloping lot, and driveway retaining where the block falls away from the street. Because so many of these are new builds, the smart move is to engineer and build the retaining as part of the project rather than discover the problem after the slab goes down.

On the bigger acreage lots, the retaining can be substantial — long runs and taller walls to terrace a rural-residential block into usable areas for the house, shed, pool and yard. It’s worth knowing that Highfields’ position on the range doesn’t spare it the reactive clay that the rest of Toowoomba contends with, so even a brand-new wall has to be drained and engineered for ground that moves with the seasons. A wall that looks fine the day the keys are handed over can start to lean within a couple of years if the drainage was skipped to save a few dollars on the build. We don’t cut that corner.

Walls for new builds and acreage blocks

We build the full range and size each wall to the lot and the build:

  • Concrete sleeper walls — the durable, cost-effective workhorse for building pads, boundary retaining and terracing on new estate lots.
  • Besser block walls — engineered and render-ready for taller cut-and-fill walls and anything carrying a driveway or structure above.
  • Rock and boulder walls — a natural fit for the acreage and rural-residential blocks where there’s room for a battered stone wall.
  • Drainage and repairs — getting the drainage right first time so a new wall never becomes a problem.

Get the retaining right from day one

The advantage of building new is that you can do the retaining properly before anything else goes in — and the cost of getting it wrong on a new home is steep. We build with galvanised steel posts or engineered block as the design requires, footings sized to the cut and the load, and the ag-drain and gravel drainage that stops water pressure building behind the wall in Highfields’ clay. Walls over a metre or carrying surcharge are engineered and approved as required, and you can check any builder’s licence with the QBCC. Every builder in our network is licensed and insured, so the retaining on your new build is done once and done right.
